Studio: MCM Remodel
2022 | Residential Remodel + Addition
The clients for this midcentury remodel and addition were three women friends in their 50s that purchased the home together and want to live communally as they retire and age in place. Two will live in the main house and one in the tiny home attached to the shared studio space and carport addition. The existing home was expanded on the back side to preserve the front original elevation and allow for additional spaces. The additions of both the main house and ADU / carport were restricted to allowable size by impervious cover rules.
Staying true to the origins of this 1955 ranch style home, the goal was to maintain and improve the midcentury modern aesthetic. Keeping the front stone clad elevation with floor to ceiling windows allowed the distinct neighborhood characteristics to be celebrated. Blending those original details with iconic styles of the era such as wood clad ceilings, beams, clerestory windows, perfectly complimented the midcentury modern finishes and furnishings.
Gathering spaces for socializing and hosting both indoor and outdoor were a priority as was privacy from the street. A gourmet kitchen with specific storage and refrigeration needs had to be achieved while allowing for ADA appliances and aging in place features. While modern conveniences were added, the style is true to the midcentury modern aesthetic the clients desired. Although each occupant had their own unique needs, the communal spaces needed to function for all of them including the shared studio space as an art studio and fitness area.
Without sacrificing style, aging in place design is carefully considered with the option to easily adapt to possible future changes in ability. Continuous floors, wide clearances in walkways, doors, and wheelchair radius’ where needed, walk in showers with non-slip tile and grab bars planned, lever handles, cabinets that can be converted, and at least one no step entry are a few examples of how this is addressed.
