Studio: Tiny Home

2022 | Residential New Construction

Village Farms, a small community of park model tiny homes on wheels in East Austin, sells affordable spec park models for purchase on leased lots. The idea was to create a tiny home that embodied the simpler minimalistic lifestyle where your surroundings have greater importance than the size of your home. In a more literal sense, the use and placement of windows and skylights become portals to the outside world. The front porch is a prominent design feature as it will act as a threshold to connect the occupant to their site and vice versa. Exterior living spaces for a tiny home community are where meaningful connections are made.

Although not meant to be moved frequently, the park model tiny home still has the constraints of the size of a wheel chassis and road worthy height. Additional requirements were that the home be visitable by wheelchair, which was achieved via a ramp with appropriate slope, minimum 3’ doors, and access to a bathroom. Optimal functionality was achieved with an entire wall of hidden storage, a combo washer/dryer unit in the kitchen, an integrated refrigerator, and walk through floor plan. A streamlined modern aesthetic with the use of sustainable materials keeps the user focused on the windows and their portal to the community.
